Before the light is all the way up, somebody is already out there.

It's happening this morning in more places than anyone could count — the hour before the day officially starts, when the water is still pink and the barn is still dark and a person walks out to do what needs doing. No audience. No applause. Just the work, and someone willing to go do it.

Walt Whitman heard it first, and nobody has said it better since. From the 1867 edition of Leaves of Grass:

I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work…

He didn't write about generals or presidents. He wrote about the carpenter. The mason. The boatman, the shoemaker, the wood-cutter, the mother, the girl sewing. He listened to America, and what he heard was people working — and something like joy in it.

Then comes the line that matters most:

Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else.

Not one voice. Not one hero. Every single one of us, each with a part that belongs to nobody else, all of it together adding up to a country that gets serious work done.

That hasn't changed. It's true before sunrise on a ranch in the heat, hauling hay out to cattle who don't care what day of the week it is. It's true in a shop, a kitchen, a classroom, a cab. The song never stopped. It just picked up new instruments.

Which is why we build what we build

Denago EV builds for both halves of that life. Some of what we make is for Saturday — the family in the seats, a slow lap around the neighborhood, the long way home. The OXEN is built for the other half: hauling, towing, loading, and a list that will not finish itself.

Usually it's the same person. Whoever takes the family out on Saturday is the one out at the barn before sunrise on Tuesday. Both of those mornings are worth a machine that shows up.

Because the American spirit was never one big voice.
